Let’s first define what I mean by a stale blog because this could mean a lot of different things. Maybe you have felt really uninspired to work on your blog lately or you took some time off for the holidays and now you’re feeling like it’s hard to get back into the swing of things.
Maybe it has been months or even a year since you have published content regularly and you’re really not sure where to start to revive your blog and give it to me life.
There could be a lot of reasons why a blog could have become stale.
For each person getting back into the swing of things, it may look different. When I am feeling overwhelmed or trying to do something, sometimes I can get stuck in feeling like I need to have a plan. For other people sometimes you really do need a plan in order to get going with some thing and make a change.
You may need to either make a plan for how you’re going to move forward or if you are somebody who gets stuck in planning and doesn’t take action sometimes you might need to just go with taking action first and leave a planning for once you have gotten a little bit of momentum going.
If you are in the second category where you just need to take action then I think the easiest way to revive a stale blog is to just publish a piece of content. You can make this super easy on yourself and re-publish an old post or go in and edit something that just needs a little bit of work but this will give you momentum to break through kind of the rust of not working on it for so long and help you to just get going again.
For those of you that are planners and you might be feeling like you don’t know where to start with reviving your blog I would recommend making a super attainable plan for publishing content on your site. So maybe you decide you’re going to publish just one blog post this next month and after that you will reassess and figure out another plan. Well you may find is once you do that one blog post your inspired to do more and you can double down on the momentum.
Once you are ready for a full content plan you can go back and listen to last weeks episode where I talked about how to create your content plan for a month or a quarter whatever you need to feel inspired to continue moving forward with your plan.
Now if you have been sort of absent from your blog for a while there are probably some things that you need to check. For example if it has been a while since you updated your plug-ins or maybe your website is out of date, you may need to update some of those things to make sure everything is running smoothly before you start creating new content.
Always update your plugins first, then Genesis, then WordPress. And be sure to break up updating plugins in bulk to 5 or less plugins at a time.
Evaluate the time you have to work on your blog and be realistic about what support you need!
