Hey everyone – welcome back to another episode of the podcast. If it is your first time listening, welcome! My name is Madison Wetherill and I am a web designer for food bloggers. If you are a returning listener, thanks so much for tuning in AND listening to that introduction every week.

This week I wanted to talk about something that I think is often overlooked in the online education space. And that is taking action on what you are learning.

Unfortunately, we live in a world of over-consumption. We are almost constantly listening to, watching or learning something new. The ability to easily access information is amazing – but it often can lead to overwhelm because we are not actually implementing what we’ve learned.

So in today’s episode let’s break down a few strategies to go from just consuming content to really taking action on it!

Evaluate what you are consuming

This is a huge first step! You have to first make sure you are consuming the right content for what you want to learn about right now! For example, if you are listening to a bunch of podcasts about writing a cookbook, but you never want to write a cookbook, it just becomes noise.

It’s totally fine to listen to podcasts or consume content for fun but in the spirit of learning and taking action, you don’t want to be consuming content that has nothing to do with what you are working on right now. Especially not if you are feeling overwhelmed and like you are not implementing things.

Take a step back and evaluate the information you’re consuming!

Consider when you are learning

Because we all listen to things on the go, while we are busy or distracted, it is very easy to forget what we hear.

There are a lot of podcasts that I can listen to on the go but when it is more action oriented, I try to save it for a time when I can really listen. This means that some of my favorite podcasts are ones that I don’t get to listen to weekly because I want to be able to really soak it in.

Be mindful of when you listen to certain podcasts. Don’t listen to one that is very actionable and requires some intentionality while you are distracted.

Track what you are learning

Create a system for keeping track of what you learn from podcasts, courses, summits, even things you learn in facebook groups.

Tools you can use:

  • Notebook
  • Trello
  • Asana
  • Notes app in your phone
  • Evernote

If you track with a program of any kind I would recommend categorizing the topics so if you don’t need it right away you can easily find it.

Set an action step or two

This is the most important part. Without this you just end up with a bunch of sticky notes everywhere. Pick one or two things you want to take away from what you learned and create a task for it. Set aside time to implement it.

hey friend, i’m madison

Food blogger turned web designer

I’ve been where you are. Growing fast, feeling overwhelmed by the tech side of things, and realizing that somewhere between hitting 100k sessions and launching that new revenue stream, the foundations of your business got left behind.

I started out as a food blogger, so I get it. The constant juggling. The feeling that your site doesn’t match who you’ve become. The frustration of working way too hard while your brand and tech hold you back.

That’s why I created Grace + Vine Studios—to help monetized food bloggers like you finally catch up. Whether it’s your branding, your website, or just figuring out what the heck comes next, I’m here to help you build a business that reflects where you are now and actually improves your life instead of consuming it.
